Matthew Gailey
Matthew Gailey is a singer and songwriter with a unique style that combines soul, modern folk rock and indie jazz. He currently performs his original music with his own group and sings with The Bureau of Standards Big Band as their featured male vocalist.
Originally from Melbourne Florida, Matthew grew up surrounded by music. He was influenced early on by his father's extensive record collection which contained everything from Nat Cole to Jimmy Hendrix. His first performances were as a soloist with his church gospel choir at the age of four. Matthew received a BA in Music at Florida Southern College, where he studied jazz improvisation with the late jazz legend Nat Adderly and performed regularly with several jazz groups. After graduating from Florida Southern, Matthew spent two years performing and teaching award winning choirs before leaving Florida to further his studies at Indiana University. While attending Indiana University's Opera Theatre and Jazz graduate programs, he sang with the David Baker and Pat Harbison Jazz Bands and performed numerous roles in musical and opera productions .
After spending a brief time pursuing music and theater in New York and Texas, Matthew moved to Portland in 2006 with his wife Sara. His Portland collaborations have included performances with Andre St James, Ron Steen and Clay Giberson. His current group includes guitarist Neil Mattson of Trio Flux, upright bassist Julio Appling (The Student Loan and Trio Flux) and Riley Geare (The Tomorrow People) on drums and vocals. Matthew also works as Music Director with PHAME Academy of Fine and Performing Arts, a non profit that works with adults with developmental and physical disabilities.
